Cape Town youth lead the way as three schools celebrate Junior River Warden success

Last week Friday, 24 April 2026, City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Management Branch held its last of a series of three graduation and induction ceremonies for the Junior River Wardens (JRW) programme. The ceremonies were held across three local primary schools: Floreat, Ysterplaat and Red River primary schools. The ceremonies, which took place between March and April 2026, marked a significant milestone for the City’s environmental education initiatives, reinforcing the vital role that youth play in protecting Cape Town’s precious water systems.

‘Just one year ago, the City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Management Branch launched its Junior River Wardens programme, and it gives me a great sense of pride to have witnessed our very first batch of Grade 6 graduates stand tall as confident eco-warriors. These learners have demonstrated that environmental stewardship is not just about the future; it is about active citizenship right now. Their journey does not end here. While some are moving on to the prestigious Nature Connect Conservation Leaders Programme to continue their growth through to Grade 12, others are embarking on new environmental paths. Regardless of where they go, they carry with them the knowledge and heart to protect our ecosystems,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The three recent graduation ceremonies highlighted the dedication of Grade 6 and 7 learners who committed themselves to understanding and protecting their local ecosystems:

Red River Primary (held on 24 April): The final ceremony of the season honoured the 2025 cohort for their year-long dedication. New recruits were officially inducted with welcome packs, signalling the start of their journey as custodians of the river.
Ysterplaat Primary (held on 27 March): Brought together a multi-grade audience of learners and parents. The school leadership and City staff emphasised the power of collaboration in shaping the environmentally conscious leaders of tomorrow.
Floreat Primary (held on 18 March): Kickstarted the season with a high-energy event that saw strong community participation, fostering a sense of local pride and confidence in the outgoing wardens.

The programme focuses on:

Hands-on Conservation: Learners engage in practical activities to monitor river health and biodiversity.
Environmental Stewardship: Participants are taught to see themselves as ‘custodians’, responsible for the sustainable management of their natural surroundings.
Leadership Development: By participating in the programme, learners build confidence, public speaking skills, and a sense of civic duty.

‘These graduations are more than just a ceremony; they represent a sharing of responsibility. By equipping our youth with educational resources and a sense of ownership over their local rivers, we are contributing to the long-term resilience of Cape Town’s biodiversity,’ concluded Alderman Andrews.

The Junior River Wardens programme targets Grade 5 and 6 learners interested in nature conservation. Recruits are selected via schools in specific catchment areas or through Environmental Education Centres. When intake opens, the City requests nominations from schools and community centres.
